Default From LA to London 101

Hi Dan,

Thanks and congrats on this website! I just am begining to get a grasp and already have found it very useful. Thanks!

I'm looking to move from LA to London in September. I live alone in a 1 bedroom and am assuming that I'll probably be better off selling all electric stuff as well as most of my furniture. The furniture is a bit tough as I love what I bought (and hate the idea of shopping again), but my guess is that economically I could come close to breaking even just by selling it at a discount and buying new stuff rather than moving it and having the associated expenses. Plus, my guess is that house spaces in UK are much tighter than in the US.

That leaves me with mostly clothes (which I plan to pack mainly in the extra suitcases I have that wont be taking with me, lots of books and smaller delicated things such as decorative items, picture frames, etc. This doesn't sound like much to me, but I'm having trouble "imagining" how much space I need to ask for when requesting quotes. I did a one-minute ball pack visual gut estimate and assumed I'd need about 25 (6 cubic ft boxes) + 4 (30 hanger) clothes boxes ... all in all it seems a lot when the calculator spits out the results! Does it sound like I'm way off?

Regarding insurance: since most of my stuff is books and clothes ... does it make sense I insure them for anything else than loss? (could they actually "damage" these things considering that books presumably are tough and tightly packed, whilst clothes are basically very "cushionable"?)

Sorry for the long-winded thread ... as you can see I'm in the dark here ... and welcome any observations, etc. Take care, Max.
