we are planning to relocate our home to London UK and I do have a packing / insurance question:

Default PBO - Pack by Owner - not covered by insurance

PBO - Pack by Owner - not covered by insurance

Movers will create a packing list and will mark already packed boxes as PBO [pack by owner].
all of those boxes will not cover by the insurance.

however, you can pack non fragile items in them and they will be cover in case of lost. all breakable items in those boxes will not covered by the insurance.

will be good idea to leave the moving boxes open and show the movers the content and to mark it on the packing list. sometimes the movers will not write PBO on the boxes.

good luck packing

Dan

Default I recommend to purchase marine insurance

you said it your self " in most cases" - insurance is just when things go wrong.
I collect some images that will convince you.

enjoy

Hi--

I plan to move from US to UK in early 2009 with some treasured items, a lot of household things like dishes, pots/pans and coverlets and clothes and wall hangings and 12 framed posters and paintings of different sizes, a few rugs, and about 700 books. I expect it will come to a lot of small boxes--50 or more for the books--and quite a few larger boxes for lighter household goods. I would also have perhaps ten or 12 small boxes with delicate objects carefully wrapped. I don't plan to bring any appliances except two or three lamps I hold dear and hope to redo with transformers or new wiring according to UK standards. I don't plan to bring much furniture, if any--perhaps a side table (heavy) and a reclining chair, but not likely anything else, if those. Take that back--I have ten bookcases where the shelves fold up so they can be covered and stacked. Is a crate the best way to send it all, and how exactly does a crate work? I plan to wrap special items myself but happy to leave the rest, including the books, to a moving crew, but not sure if I have to do that or if it is really expensive. Anyway--lots to ask so any information is welcomed and appreciated. Oh--and I will also have with me my 10-year old pet parrot Harry--but I'm not likely to pack him up. ReginaC

Default Do not pack you parrot

Hi Regina

Yes I agree the crate is not suitable for the shipping crate.
Standard shipping crate is 200 cubic feet. And that’s what shipping companies is charge. The crate itself can hold 170 cubic feet (net)

And in most cases if you got over 600 cubic feet or 3 crates it will be worth while for you to ask prices of 20' container. Container will be a good idea only if you already have a place in the UK to deliver the goods. Container can not be over 7 days at the port, since the shipping line need to use the containers. How ever in crate you can ask for storage. Most companies can provide you 1 month free storage at origin and 1 month at destination and if not the fee will smaller than the container.

Please note: 20' container can hold 1,100 cubic feet [air or water] and more or less you can feet there around 900 \ 950 cubic feet of household. If you do get the container, than, you can load more things inside.

I advice you to use our online calculator for your household goods. You can see exact where you stand in terms of volume.

If you have any question or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me in this forum.
